What you need for your yoga class

If you would like to chat about attending the course, for example if you would like to discuss an injury or ongoing health issue please get in touch here. There are certain medical conditions that may prevent you practicing yoga in a public class. If you have any doubts please contact me.

You will need:

  • Yoga mat (I will not supply them because of hygiene).

  • Yoga block or cushion to sit on

  • Bottle of water

  • Blanket.

Please:

  • Drink water beforehand and if possible do not to eat for 2 hours before

  • Wear comfortable clothing and bring extra layers for our savasana (relaxation) at the end of class.

  • Arrive a few minutes before class. Unfortunately I cannot allow latecomers into the class as there are specific warm up practices that are important...plus it disrupts the class for others...please be considerate.

  • Pay in advance as places are limited. There are no refunds once you have paid.

Typical questions

  • I regularly go the gym and I'm fairly fit. Will this class be too easy?

My answer: Yoga is never easy if you are doing it right! I have worked classes with ballerinas and profession athletes...there is always a deeper breath, a longer balance, more internal focus or an extra millimeter to stretch. Even the most basic and straightforward class can test a world class yogi! This is the point of yoga...you are not in competition with anyone other than your own ego!

  • Will yoga help me relax?

My answer: Yoga is about coming back home to the quiet part of you. The asanas (movement) and pranyama (breathwork) help your nervous system to release both physical and emotional tension so by the end of a well designed sequence you will feel very calm and relaxed. The more you practice yoga, the more your nervous system responds..both on and off the mat.

  • I find meditation difficult?

My answer: Me too. I've been at it for almost 20 years and it's still tricky. For 7000 years yoga mostly consisted of sitting in meditation. Then they realised that it was too difficult for most people...that's why they invented the physical asanas (postures)...the movement facilitates meditation. Yes practicing yoga gives us a nice bottom, stronger legs and more flexible hips...but really it's about helping us to meditate...to find that calmness inside.

  • What if people stare at me in class?

My answer: Everyone else will be too busy trying to breathe...they won't have the time or inclination to look at anyone else.

  • I tried a yoga class and it was full of super bendy people in fancy expensive leggings?

My answer: I tried those classes too. Yoga teaches you not to care what anyone else thinks...

  • I have arthritis will this class help?

My answer: So do I but it hasn't stopped me practising most days for 14 years. Hatha yoga is very much about alignment and posture. You will be asked to move a lot but in ways that work with your body. Please speak to me beforehand if you have any concerns.

  • Will I work my core?

My answer: My classes are mostly about working your core but in the proper way. You will not be doing crunches...this is not working with your core. You will be working with your diaphram, pelvic floor, abdominals, psoas and correct posture.

  • I'm menopausal, will these classes help?

My answer: Yes! I do offer a specialised class for menopause, however all yoga is about working with the nervous system and this helps reduce stress which helps during menopause.

What people say about yoga with Marie

IMG_8794.JPG

Clare says...

"Marie is a wonderful teacher. It's was many years since I last did yoga, but I've found a renewed sense of peace and strength in the three years I've been practicing with her. Somehow she manages to combine a gentle approach with total accountability. It's much more than a physical exercise class - I have enjoyed being part of a lovely yogi community."

I joined Marie's online yoga classes  and they have really helped both with my fitness levels, as well as, mentally. As a teacher I often find work stressful. Marie's classes help me to focus my mind on the positives rather than the negatives. The breathing techniques I use everyday when I feel things may be getting a little too much. Saturday morning yoga is my escape after a busy week in work and I love it.

"I've been attending Marie's classes for over 4 years now. I'd never done yoga before when I joined  and it's been a great decision. Marie has been a brilliant and friendly teacher who has helped me do yoga moves I could never have pulled off. I chose to do yoga mainly because of it's mental health benefits and I feel it's improved a lot. Marie does a wonderful job at focusing on this. I would highly recommend her.

After completed a beginners yoga course with Marie, I'm completely hooked!Marie is full of encouragement, enthusiasm and her genuine warmth, kindness and knowledge is what makes her yoga classes so brilliant. I'm now doing yoga 6 days a week which is something I'd thought I'd never be able to achieve. Thank you Marie you are an inspiration!

At first it was difficult to imagine how I would ever regain the flexibility lost through years of sitting at a desk or in a car on long work trips. I saw a difference almost immediately. I now try to do it three or four classes a week. I have less aches and pains, increased strength and flexibility and have learnt important breathing techniques that I find myself doing without thinking when I need to calm myself.

Morning yoga in particular has been a revelation to me - you lie on your mat and breathe deeply, knowing you've made the effort to get there. Once that deep breath is taken, you're reconnected; to your own body, to Marie's voice, to everything. She always says: "This is where the magic happens." She's with you each step, your guide through the next 40 mins. She knows exactly what you are experiencing and thinking. Magic!

Yoga with Marie has taught me so much more than I could have hoped for. My practice improved and I feel fitter, healthier and more centred. Marie provides fantastic support and challenge. She is knowledgeable, kind, motivational and creative. I think what is also unique is this isn't just about doing challenging yoga poses but embarking on an individual journey with the support of a truly inspirational person. As a busy working mum I have managed to continue regular practice and I look forward to each session.

Marie took the time to explain why we were doing the poses as well as showing us how to do them. This and her encouragement to just accept where you are at with yoga has led me to continue. I am feeling the mental and physical benefits every day! It's been over two years now!

Menopausal and having sat at a desk for over 30 years, I knew I needed to make some changes in my life. I joined the Beginner’s Course and loved it. Marie checked in with me prior to the first class to discuss my health issues. In class she explains each step & I never felt out of my depth. Marie acknowledges that it’s hard to turn up to on your mat and encourages us all to overcome those mental challenges. I certainly didn’t anticipate the influence yoga would have.

Marie is an absolutely wonderful yoga teacher so kind and patient. She makes her sessions inspiring and joyful and gives helpful feedback to enable you to make progress. Marie is also loads of fun so the sessions are enjoyable at the same time as getting a great workout. This is not just a workout for the body as Marie regularly has pearls of wisdom to impart. Marie's yoga class gives me the best start to my day.
